Winters day mini shoots ~ child photography ~ Northern Sydney

It was a chilly but sunny winter morning at a local park to capture photos of these bubs who are all heading towards their first birthday. First up here we have Toby – his mum had made these awesome wooden block letters for his name and they really made for some cute photos. Toby just wanted to play with them though and every time we set them up it was a race to see who was quicker – him to pull them down or me to get the shot in!

Toby also has the cheekiest grin for a bub I’ve ever seen, but by far the biggest smile was saved for when he was getting cuddles from mum.

At the end of the shoot, I had my husband bring our little girl along as she is the same age as the other bubs who were there. I did a mini mini-shoot for her as I don’t always get the chance to do a proper shoot for her and generally just grab what shots I can when the opportunity arises. So it was lovely to actually get some photos of her with props and take a little time over it. The photos below are some of my favourites of her, especially the big grin at the end. It seems she has already learnt the curse of a photographers child and getting a smile on camera is already a challenge!

Another gorgeous Saturday when I headed out to Fagans Park for these family photos. There are so many beautiful locations throughout the different gardens here, it was easy finding different and lovely backdrops for the photos. We went on quite a bit of a trek around the park and most of the time it felt like we had the place to ourselves (and the ducks!) as it had been a wet end to the week and the morning had dawned a bit grey, however it was an absolutely perfect morning. The autumn colour was glowing and the last of the leaves were still clinging to the trees.

Kids make me laugh sometimes at their honesty, at the start of the shoot I asked the boy if he was looking forward to doing the photos. His answer was “No, not really”. So I made sure we quickly found some fun things to do and set him some challenges to get him going – it’s amazing how enthusiastic kids can get when you ask which step they can jump off, or bet they can’t climb on to a particular rock! He didn’t admit it, but I’m pretty sure he had a good time and we certainly got some good grins out of him.

I had so much fun photographing this family and being able to capture so much fun and love amongst the gorgeous autumn colour.

Letter to Emily – June

What a month! You’ve had your cranky pants on for a lot of this month – first you had a tummy bug which luckily didn’t last too long, but you took several days to get over it completely. Then we realised that you had two molars come through! They usually don’t show up until you are 15 months or so and took us all by surprise. Then only two days ago, one of those bottom teeth came through – so we’re up to NINE teeth already!

You are eating well, have dropped another bottle (now only three) and will try almost anything we give you. You weren’t very impressed with mushrooms but that’s about it. We’re introducing more and more finger food to you and you love feeding yourself and don’t make nearly as much mess with it as we expected. I cooked up some pikelets and shared them with you the other day and you thought it was absolutely awesome! (Excuse the quality of the photos below, they’re from my camera phone but were too cute not to share.)

You move around so much more confidently now, cruising on anything you can pull up on, holding our hands to “walk” around and climbing the stairs so quickly. We took you to the park on the weekend but you weren’t very impressed with it. Hopefully you will become more interested when the weather warms up and you can start moving around everything yourself. You also had your first trip to the zoo. We found enough animals that were moving around to keep you entertained for a while, but I think the highlight of the day for you was getting to eat a hot chip!

You have the cheekiest, happiest grin for us at the moment. You are finding the big, wide world a little intimidating at times, but always feel safe with your mum and dad around.

Afternoon in The Rocks ~ Engagement Photography ~ Sydney

What a fabulous afternoon in The Rocks, Sydney with Toby and Lesley taking photos to celebrate their recent engagement. The weather forecast wasn’t promising, but Sydney turned on a gorgeous blue sky for a perfect late autumn afternoon. I’m always amazed that no matter how busy it is down at The Rocks, and it gets really busy on the weekends, it is always possible to find a quiet corner away from the crowds – perfect to get rid of those initial nerves of being “couply” in front of a camera.

I’ve known Toby for a while and met his fiancée a few times over the years so it was lovely to spend some time with them and hear about their wedding plans and stories about how the met, first dates and, of course, the proposal. After an initial slightly nervous start, they quickly relaxed and got into the swing of things.

After some quiet spaces in The Rocks, we made our way to the harbour and around Dawes Point before heading up to Observatory Hill. We caught the final bits of sunlight and finished off with a perfect silhouette under a tree – I’ve always wanted to do this photo at this location and it turned out just as I hoped, well worth laying down in some dirt to get! Congratulations again to you both and wishing you all the best for your wedding next year!

Letter to Emily – May

What a month May has been. You have had lots of visits with family, spending an afternoon with the grandparents while Mummy and Daddy got to go out for a few hours (bliss!) and then visits from the other grandparents in the last week as well as both your uncles – everyone was in town! It was a little overwhelming having all these new faces around at first, but after a few tears you adjusted and were happily smiling at everyone and crawling around the place.

You’re moving so much faster now. The crawling has picked up pace, you pull up on everything you can reach and love standing at the glass sliding door to the backyard and watching the cat outside. You’ve taken a few tumbles, had a few bruises, but your balance keeps improving and we’re lucky you worked out to fall onto your bum first before your head hits the ground! We’ve had more teeth come through – you have six now!

Most of the time you are sleeping better, we still have the occasional rough night, but most nights you go down fairly easily and it’s getting closer (and more consistently) to 6am before you get up each day. On weekends you love coming into our room and having a play on the bed before heading downstairs for your breakfast. You’re still on 4 bottles a day, but your solids have increased and you’re still loving pretty much everything we put in front of you. Day naps have dropped back to two a day and as long as we get you down in time they are lovely, longer naps. If you’re naps get stuffed up though you get a bit cranky, so we try and keep to them as best we can.

This month you are such an active, happy and mostly contented bub with the biggest grin for everyone.

Under the Trees ~ Family Photography Sydney

I met up with this gorgeous family on a very overcast morning out at Bicentennial Park at Homebush. I love the soft light from an overcast day which allowed us to get these beautiful family photos out in the open. The two little boys were firecrackers! The older one was off and running for most of the shoot – playing in the grass, chasing the ducks, climbing things, he had so much energy. The younger boy isn’t too mobile yet, but he kept an eye on everything going on around, taking it all in and he had the cutest, crooked little smile.

The sun made an appearance for the second half of the shoot and we had so many locations to choose from. The boys obviously adored being with their parents and I loved watching the interaction between them all. xx

Happy Mothers Day

A very happy Mothers Day to all the mums out there. Whether this is your first (like me!) or one of many, I hope you are being spoilt and looked after by your loved ones. I asked for some photos of me and my little one for Mothers Day, we will do some more but these are a start – try and get out from behind the camera today and make sure you are in the photos too, your kids will treasure them! I’ve also included some photos of some gorgeous mums with their kids that I’ve taken in the past. Enjoy!

Five little boys… – Sydney Family Photography

With five boys aged six and under, my hat goes off to these parents! We met up out at Bicentennial Park at Homebush one sunny morning to see how we would go trying to get all of them looking at the camera at the same time. They were all so lovely and friendly though that we managed to get some great family photos with very little effort. Then it was on to get some images of all the boys together and then the crazy energy started. Putting five boys in a great big park with so much space and so many places to explore made for us all being constantly on the go, grabbing the photos whenever they paused for breath before they were off again. It was a beautiful morning and the boys really were delightful!

So much energy, so much activity and constantly on the go. But then when you have kids as cute as these ones they are hard to resist. We finished up the session at the water play area and let they boys run around some more. I put the zoom lens on the camera and kept well back from the splashing and it was a really fun way to end things. Luckily a change of clothes had been packed for all the boys because they certainly needed it after this!

Letter to Emily – April

Dear Emily,

As usual – what a month! You made a huge leap in everything at the start of this month. Over Easter you decided to change everything up with your feeds, sleeps – everything. You’ve dropped a bottle and we’re down to doing only 4 bottles a day now and we’ve massively increased the amount of solids you have. Very clearly two big meals a day – porridge and fruit in the morning for breakfast and then veges and a bit of fruit for lunch. You’re down to three naps a day, still sleeping really well and towards the end of this month you’ve given us several nights where you haven’t woken up and needed us to help you resettle once!

On the movement front, you made it up onto your knees but took a while to work out that you could move forwards on you knees as well. Then in the space of a week you went from a couple of tentative forward movements, to happily crawling after us or the cat or exploring away on your own. It only took a couple of days and you were starting to pull yourself up onto your knees, then your feet and a couple of days ago you pulled yourself up onto the first step on our staircase. Needless to say it is now blocked off! You’re still a bit wobbly though and have taken a few tumbles, a few tears, but you’re tough and are usually easy to distract with a toy.

You also have really started to show your personality. After not being a very cuddly baby, you now love nothing more than crawling up to and snuggling up with mummy and daddy. You give us big grins, lots of giggles and when we pick you up you happily nestle into a shoulder.

It’s been a wonderful month watching you change from a baby to an interactive and loving little person.

An Afternoon at the Beach – Family Photography – Sydney

This fabulous family decided that they wanted to have photos at the beach, so one late afternoon we made our way down to Long Reef to see what we could find there. I had already checked that it would be low tide, so most of the sand and rock platforms would be exposed, giving us loads of opportunities for exploring and some interesting shots. It was the end of a beautiful sunny day, a little bit windy and made for some fantastic photos!

The kids were fantastic, they were so enthusiastic and had a great time exploring the new beach. The kids (and mum!) all had new outfits bought especially for the shoot so they were excited to get to wear them and looked great! We played in the sand, checked out rock pools, clambered over driftwood and in general just had a lot of fun! As we neared the end of the shoot, the reflections in some of the rock pools were just magical, so of course we had to get one final family photograph…
